Interviews with Indies - A Rhyming Dictionary

This weeks Interview is with Morgan of A Rhyming Dictionary.
You can view some of her polishes that I have swatched by clicking HERE.
What is your name/names of everyone involved in your brand?I'm the only one, and my name is Morgan Johnston.
What got you started in the polish making market?I fell in love last December and I just got taken in with the idea of unique colors that were different than the drugstore brands.
Do you have a background that was conducive to getting started in this field?(example: were you a chemistry major, work in a lab, have an art degree, etc...)None whatsoever haha. I graduated in History- wrote my undergrad thesis on the effects of vodka on the Russian revolution 1895-1917. Turns out you can't get a job with a history degree so now I'm pursuing the prereq's to get into accelerated nursing.
What is your thought process when naming colors?See below.
Where do you derive your inspiration for your creations? All of my polishes are fashioned after characters or places in the Oz series originally written by L. Frank. Baum in the early 1900's.
Where do you create?A combination of my bedroom desk and the the actual mixing happens in my back yard/porch area.
Do you make polish full time?Well, I guess so but that's only because getting a job is INCREDIBLY difficult right now. As it stands, I'm currently failing to find a job at a tanning salon. Which is a little pathetic but you know, way of the world and whatnot.
What is your favorite polish that you did NOT make?Currently, I'm OBSESSED with nfu oh flakie #51.
What is your favorite polish brand?Probably Cult nails right now. I really like nails inc and models own too. All that said for drugstore brands I'm a big fan of ulta.
What is your favorite polish from your own line? The Crooked Magician
What is the best part about making polish?Knowing that I'm making things that will make people smile when they use them.
What is the worst?Screwing up and wasting supplies.
How many polish shades have you made to date?about 30?
How many polishes do you have in your own personal stash?about 350 give or take...
What is your one favorite ingredient? For polish- flakies for food- salt. for sure.
Do you make non-polish products? If so, tell us about them!I produce eggs from my ovaries. They are not currently for sale.
Tell us where your polishes are available to purchase?
Do you have a website/facebook/blog? Give us any links you want.
What does the future hold for your brand?I have some new stuff coming out as soon as I finish testing to make sure it's stable.
Do you have anything else you'd like my readers to know about you or your brand?
I'm great haha. Other than that, no. Not much else is relevant.
Morgan - you are hilarious. And pretty great! Check out some of the photos she sent with permission from The Nail Network (one of my favorite blogs you need to be following!) and Samarium's Swatches (also one of my favorites, seriously follow both of these ladies if you don't).

If you know only one thing about me, it's probably that when I swatch a collection, I always save the best for last! Best being my favorite. Sometimes you just know when looking at a stack of bottles which one is gonna be the winner, and sometimes you are pleasantly surprised.
This, however, was a no brainer. I knew immediately - this polish and I were kismet.
May I introduce you to Betsy Bobbin by A Rhyming Dictionary:
So this concludes my 4 days of A Rhyming Dictionary swatches. Every polish I tried of Morgans this week won me over and definitely impressed me. You can go check her out on Facebook or her Etsy shop - please do - you won't be sorry and neither will your wallet, her polishes are priced VERY well and made even better! Thanks so much for the opportunity to show my readers these wonderful polishes Morgan!

Here is a bottle shot of Betsy Bobbin in all of her full size glory. |
I've layered Betsy Bobbin over Cults Nails Manipulative, a gorgeous shimmery aqua. |
These photos show 2 coats of Betsy Bobbin over 2 coats of Cult Nails Manipulative, with a coat of Gelous and then a coat of Out the Door topcoat. |
Then we've got ourselves a mattified version as well - how gorgeous is this polish matte? Ugh. Soooo much, that's what. |
This polish is definitely in my Top 10 Indies. |

Working my way through these awesome polishes I received from A Rhyming Dictionary for review, today we come to - Jak Horner, he is the leader of the Horner Crew!
All of the polishes in this line are based off of Oz books - I love the inspiration behind them, not to mention the execution! Let's take a look!
Have you been thoroughly wowed by this brand so far, or what? I know I have! Morgan has just the cutest aesthetic going on with her shop, it's story and her service, I'm really loving it. Go check out A Rhyming Dictionary on Etsy - her polishes are really great quality and among the lowest priced of any Indie Polish I have seen to date!

Here are 3 thin coats of Jak Horner followed by a coat of Out the Door topcoat. |
Everything came out of the bottle just wonderfully, at 3 coats you have a good chance of getting everything you need out of the bottle in time. |
You can see here pretty well that one simple layer of topcoat smooths this out so nicely. |
The thing I loved most about this polish is that it reminded me of Cookies n Cream Ice Cream with a cherry on top! |

The (Bi)Weekly MABB Beauty Question
- Wednesday, October 10, 2012

Every other Wednesday, the Metro Atlanta Beauty Bloggers will answer a beauty-related question just for fun! This week's question
is...
What is your favorite part about makeup and beauty products?
SUCH a hard question - I mean there are just so many cool parts about being a girl and wearing makeup and having so much beauty paraphernalia at your fingertips! Not to say boys don't - I love me a good looking boy in makeup!
And that's just ONE of so many things that is cool about the beauty industry and how far it has come.
I have always been infatuated with men in makeup, drag queens, theater makeup...
I think it is so cool what you can do with a brush and some color these days and I have always been fascinated by special effects makeup - how funny is it that as I type this post out I am watching FACE OFF, the quintessential tv show about makeup!
But back on topic - movie and theater makeup, is hands down my favorite part of the world of makeup - it is the reason I began my stint in makeup artistry many years ago. These days I only do it on myself, but I still appreciate the hell out of it and anyone who has the skills to pull it off!

Here we are on Day 2 of my mini swatchfest of A Rhyming Dictionary's polishes. This swatch & review is of Tollydiggle - and Morgan wasn't kidding when she says this polish is nearly impossible to photograph!
You should love and own this polish - without question! Tollydiggle is available through the Rhyming Dictionary Etsy shop for only $7.50!
I figured the base on this polish would be lightish so I layered it over Zoya Yara, shown here. It is a sage green with gold shimmer. |
How perfect a couple do these two make?! |
This polish really has so much going on, it seems like a chameleon that is constantly changing on you! |
Application here is 2 coats of Yara and 2 coats of Tollydiggle - topped with one coat of Out the Door topcoat. |
Are you not wowed yet?! You better be! |
